Emergency Department Physician Staff

Certifications

  • All of our Attending Physicians have completed residency training of 3 or more years in Emergency Medicine and are Board-Certified via oral and written testing by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM). New residency graduates obtain Board Certification as soon as they are eligible to test.

  • All of our Attending Physicians are Fellows with the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) or the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM).

  • Two of our physicians have additional specialty Board Certification in EMS Medicine (2 of approximately 1,000 in the US)

  • One of our physicians has an additional specialty Board Certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

James Nossett, MD, FACEP, FAEMS

Medical Director of EMS

Dr. Jim Nossett

Dr. Jim Nossett was a founding partner and worked for EMS, PC from 1993 - October 2020. He has worked for HRH since November 2020. He graduated from Wabash College with a Bachelor of Arts degree, he then finished medical school at Indiana University School of Medicine (1988) and went on to complete residency training in Emergency Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine (1988-1991). He then went on to obtain Board Certification in Emergency Medicine and obtained fellow status with the American College of Emergency Physicians.

In 2013, Dr. Nossett became one of the first physicians in the country to be board certified in EMS Medicine. He has practiced in the Emergency Department at Hendricks Regional Health (HRH) since 1993, and is the Medical Director of EMS (MD1) for over 16 fire departments, as well as the Hendricks County Tactical EMS teams, Hendricks County 911 Communication Center, and StatFlight 4.

Passionate for EMS, Dr. Nossett often responds to scenes with our affiliated EMS agencies. He loves to work with and teach EMTs, Paramedics and EMS students. Another passion is racing. Dr. Nossett is an IndyCar track physician, and can often be seen responding to crashes at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Dr. Nossett is married, with two adult children, and enjoys spending time with his family and traveling with his wife. He is also a very proud Grandfather! He and his wife are actively involved in their Church. They enjoy cruising, exploring the western U.S., and taking short, off-the beaten-path trips through Indiana. They enjoy looking for antiques on their travels.

As a nearly life-long resident of Hendricks County, and with a 20 + year career at HRH, he especially appreciates the wonderful people at HRH. He has observed that there is truly a passion for people at HRH, and it can be seen in the way everyone, from cafeteria staff, nurses, technicians, and physicians work to care for our patients. He feels that HRH is a very unique place with unsurpassed medical care that is very personalized making our Hospital and our Emergency Department an amazing place. He believes it is truly a blessing to work with such a wonderful group of people.

Thomas Richardson, MD, FACEP, FAAEM

Dr. Tom Richardson was a founding partner and worked for EMS, PC from 1994 - October 2020. He served as prior Medical Director of the Emergency Department, Deputy Medical Director of the Emergency Department, and EMS, PC's Group President. He has worked for HRH since November 2020.

He was the 2014 recipient of the Fred Osborn Award for Outstanding Indiana Emergency Physician. He has special interests in wilderness medicine, toxicology, farm related injuries, and motorsport medicine. He also works as a Physician at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

His hobbies include music, horseback riding, and hiking. Tom enjoys the collegiality of the staff at HRH as well as relationships he has built with nurses, clerks, and other staff over the years. He has been at HRH for over 20 years and enjoys the challenging patient mix.

Tom loves to sport suspenders, something which none of the other group members could ever hope to successfully pull off. He chose HRH because of the well-trained staff and excellent care patients receive here.

Dr. Richardson is married, has two adult children, and three grandchildren. He and his wife run a working farm with cattle, horses, and more!

Ray Piedmonte, MD, FACEP

Dr. Ray Piedmonte worked for EMS, PC from 2010 - October 2020. He has worked for HRH since November 2020. He attended Indiana University School of Medicine where he was inducted into AOA and graduated in 1994. He completed residency at St Francis Medical Center in Peoria, IL in 1997 and obtained board certification in Emergency Medicine in 1998. Ray has a background in EMS and was a paramedic before he was a physician.

Ray enjoys spending time with family, karate, and skiing.

Mark Tompkins, MD, FACEP, FAAEM

Dr. Mark Tompkins

Dr. Mark Tompkins worked for EMS, PC from 2002- October 2020. He has worked for HRH since November 2020. Dr. Tompkins helped lead the transition of EMS,PC to HRH employment and served as Medical Director of the Emergency Departments during the years of the COVID Pandemic. Dr. Tompkins has served on the ICU Committee, Stroke Committee, Cardiology Committee, Sepsis Committee, Pediatric Committee, Medical Executive Committee, and is a Patient Experience Champion. In 2022, Dr. Tompkins was awarded the HRH WISH award for his hospital leadership during COVID and his commitment to the HRH culture.

He obtained his B.S. in Natural Sciences from Xavier University graduating Magna Cum Laude. He attended medical school at Medical College of Ohio where he was awarded Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA). He attended Emergency Medicine Residency at William Beaumont Hospital from 1999-2002 and served as Chief Resident.. He subsequently obtained Board Certification in Emergency Medicine. His special interests in Emergency Medicine are Radiology, Pediatrics, and Dermatology.

Dr. Tompkins enjoys spending time with family, music, physical fitness, and outdoor activities. He is known as a zebra hunter and mentor for the younger physicians in the group. At Hendricks Regional Health he appreciates the patient-centered care, state of the art hospital, and medical staff culture. He has killer photo-editing skills and a good sense of humor.

Jonathan J. Schmitz, MD, FAAEM

Deputy Medical Director of EMS and Medical Director of Community Paramedicine

Dr. Jonathan J. Schmitz

Dr. Schmitz worked for EMS, P.C. from 2011 - October 2020. He has worked for HRH since November 2020. He attended college at Butler University (2000-2004) before going to medical school at Virginia Commonwealth University (2004-2008). He completed residency training in Emergency Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine (2008-2011) and was subsequently Board Certified in Emergency Medicine. He is also ABEM Board Certified in EMS Medicine.

He works as Deputy Medical Director of EMS for Hendricks Regional Health (2014-present). He was appointed as Medical Director of HRH's Community Paramedic Program (August 2020-present).

His non-medical interests include Church, music, finance, all things technology, and Drum Corps International. He enjoys working alongside the expert EM physicians, PAs, and nurses at Hendricks Regional Health. He appreciates the outstanding HRH ancillary staff and administrative support.

Mark Collins, MD, FACEP

Dr. Mark Collins

Dr. Mark Collins worked for EMS, PC from 2013- October 2020. He has worked for HRH since November 2020. He started in Emergency Medicine 20 years ago as an EMT, then eventually became a paramedic/firefighter. He attended medical school at the University of South Florida (2004-2008) where he was inducted into AOA and received the Gold Humanism in Medicine Award. He completed residency training in Emergency Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine (2008-2011) and completed the EMS track. After that he went on to obtain Board Certification in Emergency Medicine and obtained fellow status with the American College of Emergency Physicians. His special interests are EMS, ultrasound, and pediatrics.

Outside of work he enjoys spending time with his family, music, shooting his bow, and being involved at his Church. He is involved with several hospital committees and enjoys the team approach to medicine at Hendricks. He is one of 4 HRH EMS members who is a twin. He has worked at nearly 20 Emergency departments in some capacity over the past 20 years and HRH is his favorite.

Jason Kindrat, DO, FACEP, FAAEM

Medical Director, Brownsburg Emergency Department

Dr. Jason Kindrat

Dr. Jason Kindrat worked for EMS, P.C. 2015 - October 2020. He has worked for HRH since November 2020. He started his ER career working as a volunteer, then as a patient technician in 1997. Before serving as ED Medical Director, Dr. Kindrat was Director of Medical Education for rotating Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine medical students at our Hospital.

He attended Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine (graduated 2012), and then completed residency training in Emergency Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine (2012-2015). He then went on to become Board Certified in Emergency Medicine.

He enjoys traveling and cooking outside of work. He is one of 4 of our group members who are twins,and he is a former Benedictine Monk.

Some things he enjoys about working at Hendricks Regional are the sense of teamwork, the efficiency, and the amount of support the nursing/tech staff provide to the doctors and PAs. He feels there is a great working environment here and a teamwork among the staff and physicians.

Cory Long, MD, FAAEM

Dr. Cory Long

Dr. Cory Long worked for EMS, P.C. from 2017 - October 2020. He has worked for HRH since November 2020. Dr. Long grew up and lives here in Hendricks County. He went to college at Depauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. He attended medical school at Indiana University (graduated 2009) and completed Emergency Medicine residency training at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio (2009-2012). He is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine and is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine.

He is married and has two children, and his wife is also a Physician.

Bryan Schultz, MD, FAAEM

Dr. Bryan Schultz

Dr. Bryan Schultz worked for EMS, P.C. from 2017 - October 2020. He has worked for HRH since November 2020. Dr. Schultz was born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He attended Michigan State University and achieved a Bachelor of Science degree with high honor in Human Biology, then studied at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan while earning his Doctorate of Medicine (M.D.) in 2014. He completed Emergency Medicine Residency at Indiana University School of Medicine (2014-2017). He received Resident Teacher of the Year at IU School of Medicine (2016-2017). He is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine and a Fellow of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine.

He lives on the west side of Indianapolis with his family.

Elaina DiOrio, MD, FAAEM

Medical Director of Palliative Medicine

Dr. Elaina Diorio

Dr. Elaina Diorio worked for EMS, P.C. from 2018 - October 2020. She has worked for HRH since November 2020. Dr. DiOrio graduated from Rush Medical College in Chicago in 2014 and completed residency training in Emergency Medicine at Indiana University (2014-2017). She completed fellowship training in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at Indiana University (2018). She is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Dr. DiOrio splits her clinical time between the Emergency Department and the Palliative Care service at Hendricks Regional Health. She is also a member of the ICU Committee.

Out of the hospital, she enjoys horseback riding and hiking.

Christina Jackson, MD, FAAEM

Medical Director, Danville Emergency Department

Dr. Christina Jackson

Dr. Christina Jackson worked for EMS, P.C. from 2018 - October 2020. She has worked for HRH since November 2020. Dr. Jackson previously served as Assistant Medical Director for the Emergency Department during the COVID Pandemic and has been a member of the Clinical Review Committee. She grew up in Valparaiso, Indiana and graduated from Purdue University. After graduation, she completed a three-year fellowship in Germany, where she worked for the United States Government. She returned to Indiana and graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 2015. She completed residency training in Emergency Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine (2015-2018). She is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine.

While not working, she enjoys travel, the outdoors, and spending time with her husband Ken and dogs Noodle and Tucker.

Melissa Schultz, MD

Director, Medical Education

Dr. Melissa (Millie) Schultz

Dr. Melissa "Millie" Schultz worked for EMS, P.C. July 2020 - October 2020. She has worked for HRH since November 2020. She hails from Fishers, Indiana. Dr. Schultz graduated from Wittenberg University with a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts in 2011. She enjoyed several years working as a phlebotomist at Hendricks Regional Health before attending medical school. She graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 2017. She completed Emergency Medicine Residency at University of Louisville Department of Emergency Medicine in June 2020, where she also served as Chief Resident.

She enjoys reading fiction while curled up with her cats Stella, Pooh, and Little. She loves wine and good food. She and her fiancé, Greg, intend to spend a lot of their off-time traveling around the world. You might also see them riding their tandem bike to their favorite restaurants in Broad Ripple!

Tyler Heavin, MD

Dr. Tyler Heavin

Dr. Tyler Heavin works for HRH from July 2021 - present. He attended Franklin College from 2009-2014, majoring in Chemistry and Biology, with a minor in Biochemistry. He was a Biomedical Sciences Visiting Scholar at Oxford University in Oxford, UK from 2012-2013. He then attended Indiana University School of Medicine from 2014-2018. He completed residency training in Emergency Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine (2018-2021).

Dru Sappington, MD

Dr. Dru Sappington

Dr. Dru Sappington joined HRH in April 2022. He attended Indiana University from 2009-2013, majoring in Biochemistry, with a minor in Biology. He then attended Indiana University School of Medicine from 2013-2017. He completed residency training in Emergency Medicine at University at Buffalo (2017-2020).

Jillian Murphy, MD

Dr. Jillian Murphy joined HRH in October 2023. She graduated from Marian University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science and then attended Indiana University School of Medicine. She completed residency training in Emergency Medicine at Indiana University in 2020.
